The meeting brings together representatives from towns and cities in which the motoring industry plays a key role (Città dei Motori) and is a key event for the future of the automotive industry and motoring tourism. This year it was hosted on the site of SIM Maranello, which is renowned for excellence in technological innovation. The occasion confirmed SIM’s leading role in research and development in the sector, strengthening the bond between motoring traditions and new challenges for the industry.
Maranello at the centre of the debate on Italian provenance of engines
On 21 February, SIM Maranello hosted a special meeting of the members of Città dei Motori network, bringing together 28 mayors from towns and cities in which automotive industry plays a key role, to discuss the future of the automotive industry and the development of tourism aimed at car enthusiasts. The event confirmed Maranello’s central role in the sector, welcoming members of local government and institutions, and leading figures in the industry. Topics explored at the meeting included the promotion of engines made in Italy, the organisation of the third Italian Motor Week in September, and the roadmap for the proposed law for recognition of automotive tourism.
Another important focal point for the meeting was the environmental transition of the Italian and European automotive industry, underlining the urgent need for concrete measures to guarantee sustainability, competitiveness, and employment.
The importance of innovation and research in the motoring industry
Speakers at the meeting from the political and industrial world included Marco Stella, chair of the Anfia Components Group, who underlined how 2025 would be a key year for the future of the Italian motoring industry. According to Mr Stella, it is essential for Europe to review its environmental transition strategies to make them more sustainable and compatible with the needs of Italian manufacturing.
Stefano Vaccari, chair of the Amici dei Motori Intergroup, also reiterated the urgency for an industrial plan to relaunch the industry, combining innovation, research, and the valorisation of local heritage.
Motor tourism and promotion of local areas
In addition to industrial and regulatory issues, the meeting also provided an opportunity to highlight the potential offered by motoring tourism. Mayors at the meeting were given guided tours of outstanding businesses in Maranello and the surrounding areas, including Sim and Ferrari, as well as a trip to the local Ferrari Museum. The event ended with an opportunity to enjoy a journey through local food and wine specialities, demonstrating how the ability to combine interests in engines, local traditions, and culture is a strategic asset for tourism and the community economy.
